Shelley Petersen joined the Del Mar Union School District on December 5, 2005. Since her arrival, she has enjoyed working with a school board focused on high quality educational programs.

Shelley grew up in southern California and attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where she received her Bachelors of Journalism degree. Upon returning to California, Shelley immediately began working on her teaching credential. Her career in education has been spent in the Vista Unified School District where she taught kindergarten and second grade. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Shelley was a regional and local presenter in language arts. As a school administrator, Shelley served on several district level committees concerning budget, negotiations, and boundaries. This school year marks Shelley’s tenth year as an administrator, seven of those as an elementary school principal.

Shelley’s work in education has focused on providing an environment where all children can excel. She involves herself in every aspect of her school community and maintains a strong focus on the school’s instructional programs. Open and on-going communication is a key element in the effective relationships she establishes with students, parents, and staff.

Shelley and her husband live in Vista with their three children. Weekends are spent enjoying soccer, football, and the activities of a busy family.
